SchemeServe shared server resources have recently been subject to a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack.
DDoS attacks are perpetrated by criminal gangs who wish to temporarily disable or compromise online services by directing large volumes of Internet traffic at specific servers or services.
The motivation can be extortion, revenge or political; the sophistication of such attacks, the means and resources available to the attackers, vary significantly.
In this specific case, a shared online resource used by SchemeServe to distribute legitmate customer traffic between our various web servers (called a 'load balancer') was attacked.
The load balancer in question is one of many provided by one of our two principal hosting companies, Rackspace, which is part of a load balancing cluster shared by many Rackspace customers.
Some SchemeServe customers have been experiencing intermittent service slowdown for the past few days, culminating in service outages today.
The attack activity windows are listed below...
2017-10-10 from 12:18 - 12:43
2017-10-11 from 10:27 - 10:39
2017-10-12 from 9:20 - 9:30
2017-10-13 from 10:07 - 11:04
Fortunately, once the root cause was known, SchemeServe were able to make immediate changes to our hosting platform in order to place all SchemeServe services outside the range of the ongoing attack.
SchemeServe customers are currently reporting normal service levels and our internal testing is showing normal response times once more.
We are however monitoring the situation very closely and would ask all customers to report anything unusual at the first opportunity.
SchemeServe will continue to work closely with Rackspace to understand the motivation and full scope of the attack if possible - although at this stage Rackspace are unable or unwilling to share more detailed information with us. If and when we have further detail SchemeServe customers will be the first to know.
It is clear however that SchemeServe itself was not a specific target.
Thank you to all customers who have raised tickets during this period, we appreciate your patience and attention over the past 4 days.
